Why not protect data/systems/networks like a castle?

The idea stems from how castles were built to withstand a protracted siege.

If we could use the digital equivalent of what a castle uses it might be useful to borrow an idea from the past to deal with current and future problems when it comes to cyber security.
Some examples:

1. The thick multi-layered walls….Multiple layers of security

2. The ability to lock down/ section off breeched areas from other areas of the castle

3. The Moat and draw bridge. The ability to physically lock attackers out of the network by disconnecting.

4. The portcullis, a way to filter/ lock down incoming traffic.

I would like the input and ideas of others so please reply if so inclined.
