The Far Cry series, to the best of my knowledge, has never been big on multiplayer. The option is there for those who want it and it's apparently decent, but I suspect only a small slice of the Far Cry audience actually bothers with it. The sprawling, open-world settings are clearly designed first and foremost for a single-player experience. Presumably with that in mind, Far Cry Primal is dropping multiplayer, including co-op, altogether.

“We are focusing entirely on creating the best possible Far Cry experience for our fans. Bringing the Stone Age to life and providing players with a strong gameplay experience based off of the Far Cry legacy meant we had to reinvent our core gameplay loop. This was definitely not a small undertaking,” Ubisoft Community Manager Jason Paradise explained on Steam “Our focus was on delivering this fantasy which required clear priorities for the team. Therefore, in the early stages of the project, we made the difficult choice of focusing our efforts on the single player experience.”

Personally, I'm a fan of single-player experiences and so I don't have a problem with that at all. But clearly not everyone is happy about it, particularly with regard to the lack of a co-op mode, which did seem fun in Far Cry 4. Primal is set to come out on March 1

Far Cry Primal Creative Director Jean-Cristophe Guyot recently described the game's prehistoric setting as “the transition between man as a hunter-gatherer and as a settler.” It's played from the perspective of an early human struggling to survive in a hostile world, wielding only rocks, spears, bows, and overpowering body odor as weapons. You, however, will need to wield something a little more advanced if you want to get in on the action.

The Fred Flintstone:
•OS: Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64-bit versions only)
•Processor: Intel Core i3-550 | AMD Phenom II X4 955 or equivalent
•RAM: 4GB
•Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (1GB VRAM) | AMD Radeon HD 5770 (1GB VRAM) or equivalent
•Hard Disk Space: 20 GB
•Peripherals: Windows-compatible keyboard, mouse, optional controller

The Thag Simmons:
•OS: Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 (64-bit versions only)
•Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K | AMD FX-8350 or equivalent
•RAM: 8GB
•Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 | AMD Radeon R9 280X or equivalent
•Hard Disk Space: 20 GB
•Peripherals: Windows-compatible keyboard, mouse, optional controller

Ubisoft also noted that the following video cards will be officially supported:

AMD Radeon™ HD 5770 (1 GB VRAM) or better, HD 7000 / 200 / 300 / Fury X series
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460 (1 GB VRAM) or better, GTX 500 / 600 / 700 / 900 / TITAN series

Don't forget that Far Cry Primal will not have co-op multiplayer, but it will have torture, mutilation, and the occasional, tasteful bumping of uglies. I'd call that a fair trade. It comes out on March 1.

Ubisoft demos Far Cry Primal in two-hour community stream

https://www.youtube.com/embed/jhv3Jq6O

The Far Cry Primal system requirements were revealed yesterday, providing a timely boon for all of you who want to know if your rig can play it. For those more interested in determining if you actually want to play it, the two-hour community stream Ubisoft posted to YouTube today might be more informative.

The video features a lot of chit-chat with Illustrator Naomi Savoie, Creative Director Jean-Christophe Guyot, and Lead Writer Kevin Shortt, so you'll need to do some clicking around if you're only here to eyeball the gameplay. There's plenty of that on offer though, and it looks absolutely gorgeous—this obviously isn't being played on a baseline system—but there's some interesting stuff in the developer commentary, too.

Shortt, for instance, explains that the studio decided to forgo subtitles in open-world (i.e., non-mission) sections of the game because they made the screen “too busy", but players can still get a handle on what's happening around them as they pick up the basics of the various in-game languages, which are built upon a system of “real logic." (Remember that Ubisoft actually had linguists work on the game to help develop and then regress the tribal languages, to give them a greater feeling of authenticity.)

Far Cry Primal comes out on March 1.
