this is a strictly MMO game
Fractured Space is one of many MOBA-buts in development, with its particular speciality being really quite large spaceships instead of titchy heroes. It hit Early Access in late 2014 and is aiming to launch from its cheap-but-buggy version into F2P-but-finished one some time this year. However, for this weekend you can download it completely free and keep it forever, assuming you never forget your Steam password or disavow all gaming to go and live in the woods. The deal ends on Monday at 10am Pacific / 6pm British.
The download is available through Steam, natch, and comes as part of an update to the game which is resetting every player back to square one, finalising the tech tree and confirming that there will be no more progression changes that require this drastic an action. The game's not quite done yet, but they are willing to soft-launch it in this manner, similar to how Blizzard have done with their F2P titles in recent years.
Worried about not having anyone to play with? Devs Edge Case Games, who also developed Strike Suit Zero under the name Born Ready Games a few years back, say they've already had 400,000 purchases in Early Access and Steam notes they regularly have a thousand or so folks playing. This can only help that - normally I steer clear of Early Access even for games I'm interested in, but when it's free, well, I'll give it a shot.
They've also come up with this new trailer, which doesn't do a very good job of explaining the MOBA-like tactical maneuvering of giant carriers, but is made using in-game assets and does look incredibly pretty. Also it has spaceships flying through other, larger spaceships as laser beams are fired. Videogames:
Want to know more before you dive in? Jeremy talked with Edge Case about how Fractured Space remains fast-paced despite its scale. If you do see yourself getting well into it
Steam is also hitting half price on the various founder's packs. There's no version that gives you access to everything they make forever, but the Vanguard pack will run you £14.99/$19.99/€18.49 and has a ton of skins, ships and boosters to be getting on with.
