Want to see a satellite dish melted into a skeletal husk in 2160p? Who doesn't? Even if you don't have a 4K monitor, the latest Just Cause trailer shows off some more destructibility, a Formula One car, some unlucky trains and some excellent draw distances.

It's out in a couple of weeks, on December 1, but you can get an early impression of how Avalanche has tried to progress from JC 2.

Just Cause 3 is a game about blowing stuff up, just 'cause it's there. Get it? It's a play on words! Is the cause just, or is it all just 'cause? It's quite clever, actually, because it so succinctly captures the dichotomy of videogames, in which you, as the savior figure, inflict levels of violence that transcend gratuitous and push into the obscene, all in the ostensible pursuit of a higher, perhaps noble, sometimes beautiful, goal. It's a disconnect between means and end that's so ubiquitous in our genre that some developers choose to not simply overlook it, but embrace it, essentially encouraging players to ignore the studio's envisioned narrative in favor of indulging their worst anti-social tendencies, guilt and consequence-free.

So anyway, here's what you'll need to play it.

Just Cause 3 dev diary teases procedural bridge crumbling Tom Senior PCGame

You're always going to get a good explosion out of a Just Cause 3 video, and this one comes with bonus clips of bridges crumbling in satisfying ways. The engine now uses upgraded Havok tech to process destruction procedurally instead of performing mesh swaps and hiding the moment a 'bridge' model swaps with a 'damaged bridge' model with a cloud of dust.

The modern memory availability "allows for things you couldn't do in the last generation". Is one of those things the ability to level a power plant with a handheld mortar as Rico does at 1:05? Speaking of memory, leaked system requirements suggest that Just Cause 3 will demand at least 6GB of it in your PC. That's a lot of bridge calculations. The game is out on December 1.

Just Cause 3 gets performance patch ahead of official launch

Some naughty scamps have managed to get hold of Just Cause 3 early in certain territories, prompting Square Enix to release details about an upcoming pre-release patch.

The patch launches this weekend over all platforms and apparently improves a bunch of things.

So if you're playing it early, you might not be getting the intended experience and it could be worth holding off for the patch. Or, you know, just blow some shit up anyway.

The full patch notes are below. I like how they start off by injecting the Just Cause personality into it and then kind of just give when they realise how much effort it's going to take.

FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS

• The Medician Department of Nature Conservation has pored over every inch of our beautiful island for cracks and removed them
• The Medician Department of Motor Vehicles has taken measures to acquire poorly-tuned vehicles and burn them
• Di Ravello’s Militia has been given a refresher course in combat and spatial awareness as per the General’s recent mandate
• The Medician Department of Infrastructure has made some adjustments to certain roads to prevent traffic jams
• Various stability/crash fixes
• Various camera fixes
• Various Havok destruction optimisations
